The diversity of models is as great as the use of materials, colors, sizes and names are the imagination of the manufacturer. This, which can be a recreational option, is in the hands of the children and the family in general of the different communities for a healthy job and enjoyment of their free time.

To make comets, the following steps should be taken into account in the following order:

  1. Select the model of the kite.
  2. Prepare the materials.
  3. Match according to the selected model, the materials to be used.
  4. Start the design or construction of the comet structure.
  5. Start the drawing or making of the comet’s sail.
  6. Stick the candle to the structure of the comet.
  7. Place the threads that hold the comet.

During the execution of these steps in the making of the comet, the measures of the established plans must be respected. In case of applying variants, the mathematical proportions in its completion should be respected, be careful in the selection of the comet and the materials you can count on. Always keep in mind the principle of: Do not start to make a comet until you have all the necessary materials.

To make comets, materials such as:

Also, the most commonly used materials for making the sail are:

So, what are the ideal places to fly a comet? The places that can be selected for this purpose are: beaches, wide and clear terrains, it is highly recommended to use no more than 100 meters of wire to control and allow other kennels to see and enjoy this show.

Taking into account these generalities about comets, workshops aimed at children were developed to learn this attractive game. With these workshops they must master the basic aspects in the confection and the flight of the comets, being able to apply this knowledge during the development of this activity. Three workshops are proposed that are described below:

Topic I: Comets, their origin and use throughout history.

Topic II: Generalities on the structure of the comet.

Topic III: Characteristics of the process of making and flying Cuban comets.

Workshop I: Comets, their origin and use throughout history

Objective: To argue the origin of the comets and their importance in the development through the different stages of evolution of society.


It begins by asking the following questions to motivate the activity and will apply the participatory technique “Rain of Ideas”

  1. What is a comet?
  2. How many types are there?
  3. Why do you like them?

The ideas contributed by the children with the following elements will be completed:

The comet belongs to the aerodynamic objects and in truth is the oldest of all its antiquity, it is more than 4000 years old and its origin is located in the Asian continent, Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, where it still forms part of their culture.

According to the legend, the first one arose in China that when a fisherman in his boat the air rose from his head, the hat with which he was protected from the sun, he thought of tying several strands. When the air lifted his hat again, he remained to his astonishment suspended in the air. The use of these aerodynamic objects have been varied from their origins, to measure distances of difficult access, for military purposes, to demonstrate scientific theories, managing to transcend through the history of the peoples that have managed to maintain the tradition for centuries, giving it the more subtle use of the toy. This proposal aims to rescue this tradition in the population settlements to achieve through it that a greater number of people enjoy this wonderful world that is the confection and flight of kites.

You will be shown different types of kites (made earlier) so that the children can discover the name. Subsequently, the theme is closed by guiding the search on other models of comets to demonstrate the great diversity of its existence.

Conclusions: The children will value the activity giving it a number from 1 to 5, where 5 means novel and interesting, 4 is relatively new, 3 is acceptable, 2 is not very novel and 1 is not at all novel and tedious.

Workshop II: Generalities on the structure of comets

Objective: Describe the structure of comets, as well as the materials and tools needed for their preparation


When resuming what was discussed in the previous workshop, children are invited to answer the following questions:

1 – What models of comets are there?

2 – They are called kites or kites?

3-What tools do you consider necessary to make them?

4-What aspects differentiate comets?

5-What sequence should be taken for its preparation?

6 – What materials are needed for its preparation?

Comets by their shape or structure can be grouped into different categories to be able to identify them.

  1. Mono thread is called flat comets, cells, combat, flying boxes, all with frame or rigid structure.
  2. Mono Thread without frame or rigid structure the sledges with all their variants.

Conclusions: The children will value the activity expressing with a word how they felt during the activity.

Workshop III: General information on the process of making and flying Cuban comets

Objective: To develop specific skills in the making of Cuban comets, as well as in the manipulation of the tools that allow to execute this process.


This third workshop is where you will concretize what you learned in the previous ones. From the domain on the part of the children of the basic elements of the confection and the flight of the comets, it will proceed to realize of practical form the activity. For this, the basic aspects will be retaken

1 – What characterizes the Cuban comet?

3 – What are the fundamental steps for making comets?

4 – What requirements should be taken into account for the kite flight?

There are several Cuban models among which we can study.





In spite of the fact that comets are currently a toy, their construction depends on the measures previously selected, which allows applying a logical formula to vary their size at the time of their preparation. For example:
