Build a flying kite

Kite workshops

Kite workshops

The diversity of models is as great as the use of materials, colors, sizes and names are the imagination of the manufacturer. This, which can be a recreational option, is in the hands of the children and the family in general of the different communities for a healthy job and enjoyment of their free time.

To make comets, the following steps should be taken into account in the following order:

  1. Select the model of the kite.
  2. Prepare the materials.
  3. Match according to the selected model, the materials to be used.
  4. Start the design or construction of the comet structure.
  5. Start the drawing or making of the comet’s sail.
  6. Stick the candle to the structure of the comet.
  7. Place the threads that hold the comet.

During the execution of these steps in the making of the comet, the measures of the established plans must be respected. In case of applying variants, the mathematical proportions in its completion should be respected, be careful in the selection of the comet and the materials you can count on. Always keep in mind the principle of: Do not start to make a comet until you have all the necessary materials.

To make comets, materials such as:

-Pine tree

-Cedar

-Güin

-Caña brava

-Coconut verata

-Bamboo

-Carbon fiber

-Fiberglass

Also, the most commonly used materials for making the sail are:

-Paper

-Nylon according to texture and color

-Nylon fine fabric

-Tivek

For fixing of a candle can be used:

-Knots with thread

-Rubber paste with its variants

-Scotch tape

-Cooked seams with threads

-With elastic bands

-Tools used to make comets

-Blueprints

-Cutting tool: handsaw, blades, circular saw, hacksaw

-Lienza or tape measure

-Scissors or blades

-Pencils, pens

-Bevel, semicircle, ruler, compass

-Cardboard

Work table or flat surface that allows to trace without difficulties in the trazo. This work activity is the most important, because it allows finally, to elaborate with accuracy the structure of the comet.

After the comet is made, a place of flight must be found. This should not have trees in the surroundings, since it would facilitate that it entangled in them, in addition to removing the air in the low area. This area of flight must not be near airports either, as this can produce accidents of incalculable consequences; Do not fly kites near the power lines, or in places where there are railroads or roads. At the community level, comets should not be blown on the roofs of residences.

So, what are the ideal places to fly a comet? The places that can be selected for this purpose are: beaches, wide and clear terrains, it is highly recommended to use no more than 100 meters of wire to control and allow other kennels to see and enjoy this show.

Taking into account these generalities about comets, workshops aimed at children were developed to learn this attractive game. With these workshops they must master the basic aspects in the confection and the flight of the comets, being able to apply this knowledge during the development of this activity. Three workshops are proposed that are described below:

Topic I: Comets, their origin and use throughout history.

Topic II: Generalities on the structure of the comet.

Topic III: Characteristics of the process of making and flying Cuban comets.

Workshop I: Comets, their origin and use throughout history

Objective: To argue the origin of the comets and their importance in the development through the different stages of evolution of society.

Developing

It begins by asking the following questions to motivate the activity and will apply the participatory technique “Rain of Ideas”

  1. What is a comet?
  2. How many types are there?
  3. Why do you like them?

The ideas contributed by the children with the following elements will be completed:

The comet belongs to the aerodynamic objects and in truth is the oldest of all its antiquity, it is more than 4000 years old and its origin is located in the Asian continent, Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, where it still forms part of their culture.

According to the legend, the first one arose in China that when a fisherman in his boat the air rose from his head, the hat with which he was protected from the sun, he thought of tying several strands. When the air lifted his hat again, he remained to his astonishment suspended in the air. The use of these aerodynamic objects have been varied from their origins, to measure distances of difficult access, for military purposes, to demonstrate scientific theories, managing to transcend through the history of the peoples that have managed to maintain the tradition for centuries, giving it the more subtle use of the toy. This proposal aims to rescue this tradition in the population settlements to achieve through it that a greater number of people enjoy this wonderful world that is the confection and flight of kites.

You will be shown different types of kites (made earlier) so that the children can discover the name. Subsequently, the theme is closed by guiding the search on other models of comets to demonstrate the great diversity of its existence.

Conclusions: The children will value the activity giving it a number from 1 to 5, where 5 means novel and interesting, 4 is relatively new, 3 is acceptable, 2 is not very novel and 1 is not at all novel and tedious.

Workshop II: Generalities on the structure of comets

Objective: Describe the structure of comets, as well as the materials and tools needed for their preparation

Developing

When resuming what was discussed in the previous workshop, children are invited to answer the following questions:

1 – What models of comets are there?

2 – They are called kites or kites?

3-What tools do you consider necessary to make them?

4-What aspects differentiate comets?

5-What sequence should be taken for its preparation?

6 – What materials are needed for its preparation?

Comets by their shape or structure can be grouped into different categories to be able to identify them.

  1. Mono thread is called flat comets, cells, combat, flying boxes, all with frame or rigid structure.
  2. Mono Thread without frame or rigid structure the sledges with all their variants.
  3. Airships of two threads up to four with frame or rigid structure acrobatic of ballet and rhythmic (in equipment).

A list is made on a blackboard of the tools used to make comets.

Planes, saw, blades, hacksaw, tape measure, scissors, pencils, bevel, semicircle, ruler, compass, cardboard, work table or flat surface that allows drawing without difficulties in the line, among others.

This activity is the most important, because it allows to accurately design the structure of the comet.

Steps for the elaboration of materials used in the construction of the rigid comet structure.

-Bamboo

-Cut with: saw, saw blade, saw and knife.

-Spin with: saw, saw blade, saw, knife.

-Reduce with: knife and carpentry brush.

-Sand or polish with: sandpaper.

-Other materials will be processed according to their characteristics:

For the case of making the candle can be used: Paper, nylon according to texture and color, fine nylon fabric, tivek. The steps for making the sail or sail of the comet are done in the following order:

-To size

-Mark

-Cut

-Paste

-Sew

Finally, for the fixation of the sails you can use knots with thread, gum paste with its variants, adhesive tape, sewing of seams with threads and with elastic bands.

For the closing, the participants will be organized in teams, holding each member responsible for bringing to the next workshop the tools and materials necessary to make the previously selected kites.

Conclusions: The children will value the activity expressing with a word how they felt during the activity.

Workshop III: General information on the process of making and flying Cuban comets

Objective: To develop specific skills in the making of Cuban comets, as well as in the manipulation of the tools that allow to execute this process.

Developing

This third workshop is where you will concretize what you learned in the previous ones. From the domain on the part of the children of the basic elements of the confection and the flight of the comets, it will proceed to realize of practical form the activity. For this, the basic aspects will be retaken

1 – What characterizes the Cuban comet?

3 – What are the fundamental steps for making comets?

4 – What requirements should be taken into account for the kite flight?

There are several Cuban models among which we can study.

1-Papalote.

2-Papaguapo

3-Picua

4-Globito

In spite of the fact that comets are currently a toy, their construction depends on the measures previously selected, which allows applying a logical formula to vary their size at the time of their preparation. For example:

Kite

For its preparation, fine wood slats approximately 5 to 6 millimeters thick or rods of other suitable material are needed. The Bamboo previously worked with the necessary tools, with the selected material begins to assemble the rigid structure or armor.

With the tape or measuring tape, measure and cut two rods or strips to a measure that in this case can be considered (L)

The size or size (L) depends on the size selected by the comet. Then begin to assemble the rigid structure of the comet by placing the two rods or strips of length (L) vertically and join the center rod or strip of (1.5 L) being formed a small hexagon. They will join with the thread fixing it in the end of one of the rods and moving it by the ends of all the previously grooved rods. So that the thread can not run, the completion is checked by checking the measurements and the symmetry.

It corresponds to place the sails, to the finished structure on the selected material and very carefully begins to paste. It is very important during this process to ensure that the material is well stretched. It is made with the following characteristics:

Frenillos the two of above (1.5 L), the center of (1.5 L) plus 2 centimeters

Golilla part of the bottom of the kite (1.5 L) plus 2 centimeters.

Tail more than 8 meters.
